Background
The nation is located in Eastern Africa bordering the Indian Ocean. The country lies between Kenya and Mozambique. Tanzania consists of two main parts, Zanzibar and Tanganyika, Portuguese and German countries during colonial times. Both later became controlled by Great Britain and known as British East Africa. After Zanzibar and Tanganyika declared their independence from Britain they merged to form Tanzania in 1964.
Current Affairs
Democratic elections have occurred in Tanzania since 1995. Since then, Tanzania has been a united republic and spared from internal strife unlike other African nations. However, issues that still plague Tanzania are poverty and corruption. Tanzania remains one of the poorest countries, many of its occupants are living under the World Bank Poverty line. The country also has very few exports and primitive farming, but its main export is gold. The economy of Tanzania continues to be one of the world's poorest economies yet it is steadily rising due to its exports of gold and tourism of Africa's largest mountain Mount Kilimanjaro and its wildlife national parks and reserves.
